Monaco Yacht Show 2026 : Bernard Gallay on What Sailing Yacht Buyers Want
At the Monaco Yacht Show, BGYB founder Bernard Gallay sat down with Shari Liu of Superyachts.com: a strong year of sailing yacht sales, buyers chasing long-distance cruising, and comfort taking priority on board.
Monaco Yacht Show : Bernard Gallay
Interviewed by Shari Liu for Superyachts.com at the Monaco Yacht Show, Bernard Gallay looks back on a strong year of sailing yacht sales, including FANCY, C-QUEST and NOMAD IV. The common thread: buyers dreaming of long distances and faraway destinations, without giving up comfort on board. After a career in offshore racing and more than thirty years in brokerage, the BGYB founder sees the balance between performance and luxury shifting, while nine yachts from the fleet head to the Caribbean this winter.
Buyers Chasing Long-Distance Sailing
According to Bernard Gallay, the common thread across this year's sales is simple: buyers want a yacht that lets them sail long distances. The appetite for faraway destinations keeps growing, and NOMAD IV, built for offshore performance, has even reached Antarctica.
Comfort First, Performance Still Possible
Once seen as competing priorities in sailing yacht design, comfort and performance are finding a new balance. In Bernard Gallay's words: "Comfort first... Performance is possible, but comfort is made priority now."
Two Types of Buyers
Bernard Gallay sees two profiles of buyers. Some are not concerned with performance at all; others want it as well, a balance that is far trickier to achieve.
Nine Yachts Heading to the Caribbean
The same appetite for adventure carries over to cruising: nine yachts from the BGYB fleet head to the Caribbean this winter.
Sail or Motor: Seaworthiness Comes First
For Bernard Gallay, a yacht can be a sailing yacht or a motor yacht, as long as she is truly seaworthy. It is a no-frills philosophy shaped by a career in offshore racing and more than thirty years in brokerage.
