North Sound Maxi Regatta: Racing in the BVI
The North Sound Maxi Regatta runs from 10 to 14 March 2027 in the North Sound of Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands. Launched in 2025 and held by invitation in partnership with the Bitter End Yacht Club, it has established itself in two editions as one of the most distinctive events on the international maxi circuit. Five days of racing alternate between coastal courses, windward-leeward races and the Triple-Head, a time trial that crowns the fastest yacht in the North Sound. The fleet is divided into several classes, including the Grand Touring class for fast cruising maxis.

Held by invitation, the North Sound Maxi Regatta brings together a deliberately compact and closely matched fleet. The format keeps the standard high and produces genuine competition between comparable yachts, rather than the large mixed fleets found at some Caribbean events.

The venue is one of the event’s strongest arguments. Sheltered by reefs and surrounding islands, the North Sound offers flat water and consistent trade winds, conditions rarely found for yachts of thirty metres and more. Set between unspoiled islands and turquoise anchorages, it ranks among the most spectacular racing arenas in the Caribbean.
A varied race format
The five days alternate between coastal courses around Virgin Gorda, windward-leeward races and the Triple-Head, the time trial that has become the event’s signature. Previous editions have closed with a full circumnavigation of the island, giving crews a final day as demanding as it is spectacular.
A shoreside programme to match
The Bitter End Yacht Club hosts the event, supported by Moskito Island, Necker Island, Oil Nut Bay, Biras Creek and Saba Rock. An opening party, sundowners and the prize-giving move between the finest venues in the North Sound, in a deliberately relaxed spirit.
